Do This Every Morning to Win the Day 🎯

Workouts for the MYND

Ever feel like you’ve somehow done everything and nothing by the end of the day? Same, same, same.

Over the last 10 years, through countless hours of research, I’ve discovered a daily practice that’s been a game-changer for maintaining my mental fitness, especially during the week.

What is it, you ask?

I set a daily priority. Yes, just one. Uno. Ein. Un. 䞀぀たこず.

One single thing that I must get done that day. I know what you’re thinking, “MUST BE NICE that YOU can do that
I have a more complex, crazy life with many things that are absolute musts” I see you, I am you! Like you, I have a much longer list of 49 to-dos sitting beside me too. That said, writing down the ONE thing that needs to get done (if all else fails) has proven to be a winner time and time again.

I've always been fascinated by how our brains are hard-wired for goal achievement. When we give our brains purpose and direction, pure magic happens. Most of us are like soccer players with 49 goals we need to score to win any one game (aka day) which is just downright demoralizing. So, by picking one thing, you’re helping your brain understand how to WIN EACH DAY. How good does that sound?

Cool, so why does setting one goal work?

Neural Pathways + Goals: When we set a goal, our brains are alerted and start to constantly seek information from our environment to help us achieve this goal, creating new neural pathways along the way (helllloooo neuroplasticity!). This is an intelligent way to harness pure energy for a huge win! However, when we have too many goals, our brain seeks too much information, and we end up feeling more drained.

An added bonus is if you can add a sprinkle of meaning to that goal (aka - if you need to finish a newsletter lol, then can you make it like a love letter or gift to your team so that they too, can feel the power of goal prioritization)?

Amygdala + Emotion: Connecting an emotional element to a goal enhances your brain's motivation. Your brain processes information through the amygdala, which assesses the emotional significance of events. This information then loops to the frontal lobe for more complex cognitive processing - goals that carry personal meaning always gain extra importance!

So, if you're wondering what the most impactful thing you can do for your mental fitness today is, I suggest writing down a priority. It can be anything: finishing slide 16 of a deck, finalizing a dinner reservation, making a healthy dinner (pizza is healthy, right?), writing a job spec, or chasing the kids around. Remember, it's YOUR priority, so it should be something that moves you forward and makes you feel accomplished. Set it in the morning and check it off in the evening haze of 'what the hell happened today?!’

What will your priority be today? You got this.
