I'm coming out of my cage... 🎸

Workouts for the MYND

And I’ve been doin’ just fine…

Okay, there is no cage and I’m more than fine.

Can you name that tune?

“Mr. Brightside” by The Killers.

They are my all-time favorite band. There, I said it.

Now usually, friends get all snarky and say, “yeah, I loved Mr. Brightside too….when I was 16.” Well people, I usually respond with the fact that they’re considered one of the best bands of the 21st Century, have been nominated for 7 Grammys, have 16 albums, and are still so cool they give me the chills every.single.time I see them live.

When I go to one of their concerts, I can’t help but think 2 things:

  1. This is living with a Capital L! Thousands of grownups dancing like animals, scream-singing their hearts out to a man from Nevada wearing a shiny suit. What’s more exciting than that? You all should check em’ out sometime.

  2. How do they keep singing Mr. Brightside—all these years later—every single time… like it’s the first time?

They've probably played this 54,123 times, and yet at every concert it feels important, special, and killer :)

Before you think I’ve completely lost it, let me assure you—this is a Mental Fitness topic. And 3 weeks after the concert, I’m still thinking about it.

So let’s continue …

We rarely talk about the Mind Muscle that we call Heart here. Why? A lot of people find the topic “soft”. But Heart, as we define it, sits at the center of our Mental Fitness model. We define the Heart Mind Muscle as “the practice of knowing, grounding and caring for yourself.”

There’s research that has proven that your heart, and how you feel, has a greater impact on your thinking patterns, than the other way around (see Heartmath). In other words, the way you feel affects how you think in a big way.

This is where the old adage: “my heart is/isn’t in it” comes from. What you’re really saying, is neither is your head.

So, what does this have to do with the world’s greatest band?

They are a perfect example of what you can do when your heart and head are aligned. When you’re practicing, doing, or pursuing something that is not only important, but purposeful and meaningful to you, you can do anything—even sing the same song over and over for 20 years and find joy in it.

The Killers are an example of humans who know, care for, and are grounded in what matters to them—playing sick music—and then show up with the Mental Fitness of champions to make every show, every song, and every moment count:

  • According to an interview with the Guardian: Brandon Flowers, the lead singer “talks of repaying the “favor” music did for him….“My aspiration in life was to be a valet parker. That’s it. That’s what all my uncles do. Music allowed me to perform, sing and write songs. It’s just crazy!””

  • Brandon Flowers once said: “You can't save the world with music. But I can try...”

So it left me thinking: What’s your version of Mr. Brightside? The thing you could do over and over for 20 years and each time, get as excited to work on it as the first.

  • If you’ve got one… bravo, encore, and hurray. We’d love to hear from you.

  • If you don’t have one…go find it. If you’d like help, we’d love to hear from you too.

We promise, your mind—and heart—will thank you.

As always, with heart,

Ms. Brightside + Team

It’s time to build your own good vibes playlist!

  1. Create a mini playlist of songs that evoke strong positive vibes or memories for you. Listen to it when you need a mood boost.

  2. Reflect on how these songs make you feel and why. Write down any insights or feelings they bring up. This will help to connect your heart and your mind.
